Fit to ski nordic walking course
– get fitter for cross country ski-ing
[or just get fitter]
We're planning to run this nordic walking course again later in 2008 - please contact us and we'll let you know when it will take place.
This course is designed to help you get ready for your cross country ski holiday, or simply help you get fitter.
It aims to:
- give you a low impact total body workout
- help tone and strengthen the upper body muscles, particularly in your arms and shoulders, that you need for ski-ing
- exercise legs and improve stamina
- help minimise aches and soreness when you start ski-ing
- improve co-ordination and efficient use of poles
- be fun and sociable.
How this nordic walking course will work
You will learn and practice the full range of nordic walking techniques – walking, skipping, running, plus ski movements in a 1.5 hour class. These will also include interval sessions, hill work plus balance excercises, and warm-up/cool down routines. Sessions will get a little harder as the course progresses and you get used to nordic walking. High quality nordic walking poles are supplied for use in the sessions.
Your instructor, Mary Wray, is a qualified INWA nordic walking instructor and Snowsport England nordic ski instructor.
Who is it for
- People who are planning or have booked their first cross country ski holiday
- existing nordic skiers who want to get ready for their ski holiday
- downhill skiers who want to improve their general fitness
- anyone who wants to improve their fitness through a more energetic nordic walking course
Class size
Minimum 5 participants, maximum 12.
How fit do I have to be
Average fitness and happy to exercise for 1.5 hours outdoors. We’ll take breathers but the aim is to keep moving during the session.
[Nordic walking is usually offered at one of 3 levels, health – for those starting to exercise, fitness – for those who want to improve their average fitness, and sport – for the more althletic who seriously practice other sports. This course will be at fitness level.]
Where - Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens
We’ll walk around the paths and grassy spaces, making the most their inclines and small hills to get an energetic session. Grass will be the main surface, so wear trainers that you don’t mind getting muddy.
Meeting place: Marlborough Gate entrance to Hyde Park which is opposite Lancaster Gate tube
2008 Dates and Cost - to be confirmed
The cost per 1.5 hour session, including loan of high quality nordic walking poles will be confirmed soon for 2008. Please contact us to register your interest.
On a realistic note ...
With one session a week we can’t guarantee that you won’t have any aches and pains, or that you’ll ski along effortlessly, but you will definitely be better prepared for your winter holiday.
You will get more benefit from the course if you do another exercise session, such as ordinary running or walking, or nordic walking [if you buy your own poles] between classes. Even small things like taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking or cycling instead of driving will help.
